During my practical training at the K.H. Renlund museum, i got the chance to participate in the planning of an event called The Medieval Days in Kokkola. That is when I came up with the idea to the topic in my thesis. My research problem was to get familiar with the process of planning this event. As I interviewed the organizers of the event, I got to know their motives to participate in an annual event process which is mostly based on voluntary work. I also got to know what the organizers experienced to be the most important matters when planning and putting the event into practice. The theoretical part deals with topics like the basics of event planning and why events are so important when it comes to culture and tourism. Theme events and todays interest in the Middle Ages are also discussed since it is relevant to the actual event. In my study I have made interviews with the organizers of the event, by using the qualitative method. I have used a theme analysis, which helped me to see comparison in the interview material and to get valid results. The results that I got were expected and comparison could be easily found in the answers of the interview persons with the help of the theme analysis. The results could also be logically attached to the theoretical part. Owing to the results, it can be told that the organizers of the event has a mutual interest in the Middle Ages which keeps them inspired to participate year after year though it is mostly based on volunteering. The organizers have a shared outlook on the events most important target group, as well as on the future of the event, which is that the event will found its place as an annual event in Kokkola for a long time. All of the organizers strongly agreed on that team work will be demanded from every organizer on a big scale, so that the success could be achieved also in the future. Volunteering and sponsoring was also seen as a key to success and to maintain an event free of charge to the customer.
