Sammandrag:
Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to examine how research in occupational therapy describes the cultural competence of occupational therapists, who work with people with different cultural backgrounds. With the support of the research questions it examines how occupational therapist develop cultural competence and what cultural competence means to the occupational therapist. As a method, a systematic literature review was implemented as a research review. Campinha-Bacotes (2002) theory of cultural competence is used as a theoretical framework. The main concepts of the framework are cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural skill, cultural encounters and cultural desire. The number of articles that are included after the quality review are 16. Content analysis is used to analyze the results. The results is diveded into five main themes; the occupational therapist's attitude and understanding, the occupational therapist self-reflection to understand their own culture and himself as a cultural being, communication and therapy relationship between the occupational therapist and the client, the occupational therapist encounters and the occupational therapist’s challenges. The results show that cultural competence is important to be able to meet people with different cultural backgrounds and that there is a process that requires occupational therapists´to work with all the earlier mentioned themes to develop their cultural competence. Examples of the challenges that may rise in the client - therapist situations are shown in the results. The work is of great relevance given today's multicultural society and movements across borders.
