The amount of clients who are suffering from wounds have increased in the home care (in Finland). It is due to the reforms made in home care that the average age of the population rises and that diseases amongst the population increase. Wounds are a health issue that require nursing and competence amongst the caregivers. The background to my thesis is my big interest in wound treatment and home care. This thesis is ordered by the Social and Health care sector of the City of Porvoo. The thesis is a literature study based on a content analysis. The purpose of this thesis was to find out what knowledge a caregiver needs in home care when it comes to wounds and their treatment process. The purpose was also to create a handbook on wounds that improves, develops and simplifies the caregivers' process in wound treatment. The content analysis is based on 12 articles that answer the question formulated in the thesis. The literature study has been linked to a perspective of science of care and Patricia Benner's theory about grade of competence has been used as a theoretical frame of reference. On the basis of the results in the literature study, there is a need for an update in the home care givers' knowledge concerning wound treatment. The key to wound treatment in home care occupies the care giver, who gives the clients and the wounds treatment. On the basis of the results a handbook on wounds has been created, and it is directed to the employees in home care as an aid to those who are out in the field when treating wounds.
