In the summer of 2015, Sideways festival was held for the first time in Helsinki, Finland. The festivals main media and sponsorship collaboration was with the lifestyle magazine Image.
In this thesis I focus the research on why the festival, in the electronic world of today, chose to use a printmedia as a main source in their marketing plan and also to see how and if storytelling has had a remarkable impact on their way to reach out to potential costum-ers.
To build up and create a brand for a festival can be difficult when there are numerous se-lections of festivals and the competition bar is rasied constantly.
I investigate the pros and cons of using storytelling as a metod of marketing in the festival context. Sideways festival was a success and sold out their first year.
I’ve come to the conclusion it can be determind in two ways.
Either their method of using storytelling through Image, who’s already a strong brand, strenghten the festivals reputation and/or that by other factors such as media and the fes-tival program managed to catch the right audience.
Throughout this thesis I question and process the collaboration between the festival and the magazine and the storytelling behind it.
To come to this conclusion, I have based the work on relevant literature, articles and in-terviews with two key persons from Sideways and Image.
