This thesis is about homecare and the meaning of homecare. The aim of this study was that we as care providers will understand the importance of homecare for the elderly and to catch a glimpse of how it is to be elderly today. Our research questions was: How does the elderly feel in their own homes? What kind of help does the elderly get in their daily life and do they think that it is adequate? What do the elderly think about the development of society to invest in living in their own homes? The study is based on Abraham Maslows and Virginia Hendersons theories of needs.
We chose to do a qualitative study in the form of semi-structured interviews. We wanted to find elderly people >65 years and who have daily homecare that we could interview and we did that through our acquaintances. We had 7 informers, between 80-96 years old, from three different communities. The result shows that the home is an very important and meaningful place for the elderly, the elderly are happy that they can live in their homes and think that it’s something good to invest in for society. The result also shows that the elderly who lives at home is dependent of homecare and that the care is enough now, thanks to their next of kin and their acquaintances how help them. All of the interviwers points out that if their health would become worse, they would like to have an option to move to a sheltered housing/hospital.
