The purpose of this thesis is to survey the three production stages of one of the two documentaries that were shot during Expedition Arcada in the spring of 2015. I examine the outcome of working as a director, editor and scriptwriter in a documentary film that doesn’t follow the traditional production process and how this way of working affected the end result. In this case study I analyse my observations and compere them to the traditional production process that is defined by Michael Rabiger in the book Directing the Documentary from 2004. The main differences between the traditional production process and the one that took place during Expedition Arcada is that the director was not present during shooting and could not view the material before editing. This was an unfavourable way of working that arose rather as a symptom due to the nature of Expedition Arcada than an actual choice. Time management, planning and communication would have been the solution to most problems – including problems that occurred due to external elements such as weather or accidents. The biggest shortcoming is the execution of the script, treatment and proposal, which led to a chain reaction and affected all the production stages that were to follow.
