The essay Bergman om Gud (Bergman on God) is a thematic analysis of the theological themes in Ingmar Bergman's film Winter Light (1963). The film is examined on the themes of God's image, the Christ motif and God's silence. As a basis for the analysis is the book L136 – Dagbok med Ingmar Bergman (L136 - Diary with Ingmar Bergman), in which the themes are thoroughly presented. The essay is based on a sort of supernatural perspective in that it not only assumes that the film Winter Light is Bergman’s way of trying to portray his own concept of God: Through Bergman's sincere attempt to seek God this thesis assumes that God also responds. The purpose of this essay is to examine the thoughts that occupied Bergman, what he wanted to portray and how it is realized in the film. The essay examines how Bergman in the film portrays his experience of God, but also what message the portrayal might bear. The essay is based on the so-called auteur theory according to which the director is the main creator of a film. The theory states that the director should be defined by the recurrent themes he treats. Therefore the thesis also views the film Winter Light in relation to Bergman's other films. The essay examines the devastating and false image of god that Bergman wanted to portray, but it also shows that despite the fact that Bergman wanted to abandon his belief that "God is love and love is God" the film Winter Light in fact reinforces this idea. In addition this essay shows how Christ is strongly portrayed in the character Märta Lundberg, how Bergman uses a naturalistic film style to depict the absence of God, and how God can be viewed to speak through the characters in the film as well as through how everything works out in the end.
