This degree thesis is about changes in the family structure such as divorce and forming of blended families. It is based on literature and knowledge and experience of day-care personnel. The purpose of this study was to develop ways how a professional can help and support the child and family when they are going through a change in the family structure and to gain more knowledge of this family crisis and support methods. The questions I used in my thesis degree were: How does parents’ divorce/forming of blended families affect the children and how does the professional proceed when a crisis occurs in the family? Which methods can a professional use to support the child and the family to a functional day? What should a professional consider when handling a family that is going through a change in the family structure? The method used for collecting data was a qualitative method and literature. Literature and material that I have used is about social pedagogy, the professional handling, divorce and forming of blended families.
I interviewed three professional in day-care by a thematic interview. The thesis concerns divorced families and forming of blended families. Literature and the material I have used in the thesis have not been published before year 2000 but are possibly based on surveys conducted in the year 2000. The result of my research shows that the personnel have a clear idea of how to proceed when a family is in crisis. The survey shows that most of the personnel are using various of support methods such as discussion, hand puppets, stories and games but lack of time and personnel can limit the use of more advanced methods.
