The aim of this thesis degree is to get a picture of how four to six year olds comprehend film and TV-programmes. This is done with the help of literature, previous studies of the
subject and a case study of how the target group comprehended one episode of a drama series aimed for children. The theoretical part of this thesis is based on literature about the psychosocial and kognitive development of the target group and previous studies of the subject. The case study is done through screening, observation and interview. Twelve children participated in the research and all of them were interviewed separately. Subjects that are researched are i.a. the target group´s view on humour, what kind of characters and situations the target group can relate to and how they comprehend messages and contents. Owing to the theme of the drama series, which is injustice, the moral sense of the target group was examined. The conclusions are i.a. that the target group like humour built on incongruense, identify with characters of the same sex as themselves, need characters they can get to know and who have a big utility-value for them, like repetition, want more exciting TV-programmes, do not understand irony or sarcasm, preferably watch programmes that depict familiar situations they can relate to and that you need to use familiar words and concepts when you produce programmes for children. The conclusions were made based on the theoretical part of the thesis degree and the results of
the case study.
