This thesis is based on the Roma beggars present in Helsinki. Aim of the work is to try to increase the Bachelors of Social Services critically conscious media consumption by outlining and highlighting how images affect us. For this purpose, six images of a total of 61 pieces published in Hufvudstadsbladet within the period 22.11.2010-31.5.2011 in connection with articles concerning the Roma in general have been analysed. The images were reviewed with the intent to answer the following questions: 1st) What conveys the images in Hufvudstadsbladet of Roma beggars in Helsinki outgoing from the image description (denotation) and image interpretation (connotation)? 2nd) What mediates Hufvudstadsbladet media coverage and photo typesetting of social exclusion? As background has been examined the situation of Roma people in Europe today. The previous research illustrates the Roma people as a vulnerable group and clarifies media coverage of vulnerable groups. The theoretical framework of this study is based on social exclusion and includes normalization, poverty, marginalization, segregation, racism and the media's responsibility. The method has been specified for image analysis with a semiotic approach and especially to the study of images denotative (picture description) and connotative (image interpretation) significance. The analyzed images do not reflect Madsens (2006 p 127-128) normality determinations but they do confirm the criterias of poverty, marginalization and segregation, and partly racism. Based on Hbl's photo typesetting and layout, everything indicates that Hbl aspire to in their journalistic reporting focus on people, on the individual.
