The purpose of the thesis was to study how day-care personnel in the most adequate way can deal with and support children whose parents have decided to divorce. The study was executed through qualitative interviews with six employees, all currently working at day-care centers and all with long experience of working with children.
In the theoretical part of the thesis I gathered information on how children are affected by the crisis that a divorce causes from their point of view. Crisis, crisis pedagogy, reactions to crisis, life models, attachment to day-care personnel, and the professional partnership between parents and personnel at the day-care center and its importance are themes that are discussed within the theoretical frame of the thesis.
The study showed that children react very differently to a divorce and that the stage before the divorce is usually the most turbulent for the children. The reactions that the day-care personnel have noticed have generally been most powerful just before the children are informed about the divorce. The respondents pointed out that crisis management and theoretical education on how to deal with a child in an emotional crisis are very important. The information should be more extensive and available to everyone employed at a day-care center, they said.
