The aim of this thesis was to find out how the publicity of an airline in the media affects the consumer, and whether or not a buying decision can be affected by how the airline is portrayed in the media. Another aim of the thesis was to find out if a consumer sees publicity in the media as affecting their purchasing decision more than the airlines’ own marketing attempts. The theoretical study of the thesis consists of four main topics. The first chapter introduces consumption of tourist services, where the difference between consuming services and consuming products is described. Also what characterizes a flight as a service is introduced. The next chapter on consumer behavior introduces the decision making process and describes the factors affecting the purchase decision. Finally, the basics of communication and how the airlines’ communication involves media is examined. The empirical study is a qualitative study conducted by in-depth interviews. Based on the results of this thesis it appears that all those interviewed consider themselves to be influenced by what is written in the media. The purchase decision is more likely to be affected adversely. All of those interviewed would be willing to boycott an airline because of something that has been written in the media. It also appears that the media has a greater impact on the airline's image than both friends' opinions and the airlines' own marketing efforts. The majority of those interviewed believe that articles on low cost airlines occur more frequently than articles on traditional airlines.
