The aim of this thesis was to find out Ålandhotels’ current competence level of the receptionists and the management group’s competence requirements for the employees in preperation for the opening of the new hotel Pommern. Also the need for competence development and recruitment is part of the survey’s research questions. The starting point of the research was to find out the current competence level in order to compare the strengths and weaknesses with the competence requirements from the management group. All this to possibly find gaps with lack of competence and a need for competence development occurs. The theoretical part of the thesis consist of theories and results from existing research of individual competence, a hotel receptionist’s most important tasks, advantages and methods of competence development and the personal qualities and qualifications that play a crucial role in the recruitment selection. The empirical study consisted of interview questions that were answered by selected receptionists and employees from the company’s management group. The results of the empirical study indicated that it is the personal characteristics and how you are as a person rather than the individual competence and previous experience that determine how the work is done. The results also indicated that the competence development in the form of progress at the working place and learning from others are the most popular development opportunities and that the company’s need of recruitment for the coming peak season is high.
