In the spring of 2015, a group of students from the Arcada Academy of Applied Sciences goes on an expedition to the French Alps together with the adventurer Pata Degerman. During the trip, two documentaries, one of them, Expedition Arcada 2015, is a graduation production and describes the students' experiences of the adventure. The thesis is a literature review about the director's role in a documentary film and mainly describes the director's working process during the planning and recording in France. The author tries retrospectively to find out what factors in the directing style affect the result. The method used is empirical case study. Observations of experiences and own diary notes and email are the basis for the analysis and focus is on the three most problematic parts of the film, the dramatic curve, main characters and narration. The theory is based mostly on Michael Rabiger's book Directing the Documentary. The documentary's specialty is to explore and document actual people and events. This means that a documentary filmmaker can not fully control situations and events in the same way as a fiction filmmaker. The purpose of the thesis is to find out how a director optimally prepares for the recording of a documentary and how to work during the recording itself in order to create material that engages the audience. Despite the review and analysis of the three problematic subdivisions, it turns out that the director's own inner voice is the basis for the content and the message in the film, ie the inner voice of the film.
