The purpose of this thesis has been to study young peoples' experiences of how ulcerative colitis affects their daily life and how the care and information was offered by health care professionals during the early stages of the disease. A questionnaire was used to collect data from seven participants who were all diagnosed with ulcerative colitis from youth. Katie Eriksson's theory about suffering during care was used as the background theory. The answers from the questionnaires were analyzed by a qualitative content analysis, and the result was determined with help of earlier research and the background theory. The three main headings presented in the result are: Deficient information, significance of the meeting and a changed everyday life. The conclusion from the result shows that it is wearisome for a young person to develop a chronic disease and that they must be allowed enough time to accept the new situation. Young people are especially in need of receiving individual care; plenty of information should be supplied and they should have the possibility to talk with their caregiver or psychologist about the emotions that may arise.
