Opinnäytetyön teoriaosuudessa on lyhyesti projektinhallinnan perusteita.
Projektin kokoluokan huomioon ottaen työ sujui kuitenkin hyvin. The thesis was a part of a collaborative research between Turku University of Applied Sciences and the Finnish Environment Institute, in which research the influence of sulfate load on the release of phosphorus from bottom sediment in fresh water systems was studied. The purpose was to make a precise plan for the execution of the study and to monitor the execution. In the theory part of the thesis, project management is briefly discussed in general.
In the study there were test units, i.e. glass bottles filled with known amounts of river water and bottom sediment from the Maaria Reservoir in Turku. There were 14 different test units and one parallel for each, so 28 test units in total. The variables in the test units were sulfate and carbon and as controls, units without sediment and so called killed units were used. Sampling was done two times: the day after the assembly and after two months of incubating. The second sampling occurred in an environment lacking oxygen by using nitrogen tents. This prevents the compounds from oxidizing. The sediment and river water were analyzed to determine a baseline.
The work was precisely scheduled because the analyzed compounds oxidize easily and there were numerous analyses and samples. The compounds to be analyzed included sulfate, soluble total phosphorus, iron and sulfide. The assembly of the test units and the analyses were tested using the river water and the bottom sediment in advance. The use of the nitrogen tents was tested for the second sampling and a plan was devised for using them including to what extent to fill them with the nitrogen and what equipment to use.
The study did not quite go as planned but some results were acquired. The schedule succeeded but there were problems with some of the methods and equipment and the preparation was partly lacking. Taking the scope of the project into consideration it can be said that the work went well.
