The purpose of this thesis was to produce an informational package for The Mannerheim League for Child Welfare, about motherhood and the changes in sexuality during pregnancy and puerperium. We made this informational package into the PowerPoint format and presented it to the mothers in Mannerheim League for Child Welfare’s Vaaperot and Maitoliiga groups on 25 March 2021.
In the theoretical part of the thesis, we covered mainly mothers’ possible mental changes during pregnancy and puerperium, but also physical changes. We also considered the intimate relationship, the intimacy between the parents and the system of child health clinics and different services for mothers.
The essential material was collected through transcribing interviews of two professionals, Eva-Maria Rajamäki, Sexual Counsellor and Elina Kari-Koskinen, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician. Supportive information was collected from other sources.
Through the presentation of the informational package, it became clear that material of this sort is much needed. The mothers felt that the topic of this thesis is far too seldom or not at all spoken about in the system of child health clinics and different services for mothers. The peer support aspect was also considered useful.
This thesis will continue to serve the mothers in the group activities of the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare.
