Hand hygiene makes the community healthier, and transmission of communicable diseases is avoided. Hand washing with soap and water and using alcohol-based hand sanitizer through proper time and technique, as well as germs that are present in one’s hand become less and are taken away. The purpose of this study in a diary format thesis was to observe hand hygiene in a nursing home between the staff, the residents, and the visitors. The objective of this study was to determine the hand hygiene practices of staff, residents, and visitors if they were following the correct guidelines issued by the World Health Organization. This study was conducted as a diary in which the students set a goal weekly and write what they have observed every two to three days and the analysis was made after the observation. The observation was conducted in four nursing homes.
The results showed that there were some practices that were not followed due to several factors which included under-staffing, misbehaviour, or non-compliant and inadequate knowledge.
Further study on the method was recommended because it was only observed in a nursing home. The observers thought that it may have a better result if it was combinedly performed in a hospital.
