Tiivistelmä
Lumi on abioottisesti pinta-alaltaan suurin tuhonaiheuttaja metsätaloudessa.
Snow is the largest abiotic cause of damage in the forest industry. Snow damage refers
mainly to the breaking of tree crowns caused by heavy snow accumulating on the treetops. Snow damages are common in Northern and Eastern Finland and are usually located at altitudes above one hundred meters from sea level. Snow damages result in financial losses for forest owners and can also cause problems for electricity distribution and rail traffic. Snow damages are expected to increase in the future due to climate change affecting Eastern and Northern Finland, however low-snow winters may reduce the amount of damage in southern Finland. The thesis investigates the occurrence of forest damage caused by snow at different terrain heights on a case-by-case basis on a private forest property in Aisusvaara, Juuka. The quantitative data for the study was collected from the research area using forest measurement tools. Based on the measured data, we aimed to find out whether the terrain height correlates with the amount of snow damage in the research area. We also examined the correlation of other measured attributes with each other and found out how the trees affected by snow damage differed from the intact trees in terms of the attributes. Correlation was observed especially between the terrain height and the number of damaged trees. Correlation was also observed between the terrain height and the number of trees, as previously damaged trunks had been removed from the area. Based on the study, it can be concluded that the proportion of snow damage increases progressively as the altitude increases in the research area.
