The purpose of the thesis was to highlight different expectations and experiences of the care of young mothers. The respondents wanted to highlight the experiences of the young mothers and study how they were treated in the health care context. The respondents' questions were: What expectations did the mothers have before pregnancy and childbirth regarding the care relationship? How did the mothers feel they were treated during pregnancy, birth and after-care? What improvements in health care do the mothers consider necessary when it comes to young mothers? The respondents made contact with mothers aged 15-19 from the Ostrobothnia region whom they found with the help of snowball sampling. As data collection method, semi-structured interviews were used, and the material was then analyzed using content analysis.
The results showed that the majority of young mothers are satisfied with the care they receive during pregnancy, childbirth and the after-care. The midwives are friendly and give good information and both explain and ask the most important issues. The mothers do not want to be treated differently because of their young age, and consider themselves not to have been treated differently. The mothers were not happy when the midwife did not have enough time with them in the delivery room, which made the mothers feel left out and insecure. Other negative issues that emerged were that the midwife did not always speak the mothers' native language, midwives did not give the fathers enough attention, and in some cases the midwives did not give sufficient information. All of the mothers felt the need for a support group for younger mothers. There was only one mother who attended a support group at the time, but the others would happily join if they had the opportunity.
