ABSTRACT

In this thesis the views of ninth graders on the school social worker`s tasks were surveyed. The aim of the thesis was to find out what ninth graders know about the work of the school social worker and what kind of wishes they have for their school`s social workers. Our partner city will use the obtained results to develop the school social worker´s job description.
The thesis was carried out using a quantitative method. In the spring of 2020, the ninth graders of the partner city received a link to the survey created using the Webropol tool, to which they had two weeks to respond. The survey consisted of multiple-choice questions, but there were also open-ended questions. The survey was conducted in exceptional circumstances where school teaching was carried out as distance learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The questionnaire was sent to about 400 ninth graders from basic education schools with a ninth grade in the city. Slightly less than a quarter of the city’s ninth graders responded to the survey.
Based on the responses to the survey, it can be seen that the ninth graders of the partner city know the school social worker of their school. They also know quite well which tasks the social worker has and how access the services provided by the school social worker. Pupils provided valuable information for developing the work of school social workers by answering open-ended questions. Half of the participants of the survey had not used any services provided by a school social worker.
Based on the survey, there is a need for development in terms of receiving an appointment and the length of appointments, as well as lowering the threshold for going to the reception. These particular school social workers have made themselves known to the students and they have been able to make students aware of their services.
