Mental illness is the most common reason for disability pensions granted to young adults in Finland. Persons suffering from a psychiatric condition have a higher risk for marginalisation. The current Covid-19 pandemic has left many in a vulnerable situation with many services and activity groups being discontinued for longer periods. The purpose of this activity-based thesis, commissioned by a mental health rehabilitation unit in South-ern Finland, is to develop and present a guide on rehabilitating group activity for persons undergoing psychiatric treatment. The guide covers structure, content, scope and leadership as well as evaluation of the group therapy sessions laid out in this thesis. The thesis presents a client-centred approach to increasing engagement and participation in meaningful group activities for persons with mental illness, emphasising also the therapeutic needs of this particular target group. The theoretic perspective of this thesis stems from the human needs for doing, being, belonging and becoming, occupational balance and occupational value dimensions with an overall focus on the concept of well-being. With a client-based approach, both the staff and the existing group members have been interviewed during the working process and they have thus been involved in the creation of the content for the group activity meetings. The group activities have been tested in pilot meetings and subsequently evaluated with a Likert scale and free text. Based on this evaluation, the activities have then been modified especially as regards the meaningfulness and leadership of the group activities. The development process has resulted in a guide for three activity group meetings, providing tools for evidence-based and client-centred work with the target group.
