The research question, whether it can be profitable to commercially produce culinary plums (Prunus domestica) in Aaland Islands, was mainly tested by analysing the results of a screening trial of Baltic plum varieties done by the advisory service Ålands Hushållningssällskap 2013-2020. Also, literature studies and interviews with experts have been used to support and explain the results.
The results show that the trialled varieties do not have potential to yield the tonnage of plums demanded for a profitable production. It was also showed that the plum trees blossom so early in spring, that the risk for damage from frost to the flowers is imminent. When it comes to plant protection, the results showed that plum fruit moth (Grapholita funebrana) is the most serious pest and Monilinia fruit rot (Monilinia fructigena, Monilinia laxa) the most serious disease. Furthermore, it seems that in plums, fruit rot is largely a secondary pathogen due to damage from the plum fruit moth larvae.
Plums have not earlier been grown commercially in Finland, and therefor very few plant protection products, especially insecticides, are registered for this crop. Therefor it has been impossible to treat the damages of the plum fruit moth larvae in the variety screening trial. A continued work with extended variety screening and testing of plant protection products and methods is necessary, to determine if commercial production of plums in Åland Islands can be recommended in the future.
