Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this theoretical thesis is to show the importance of the Well-Being in Early Childhood Education and Care and to evaluate the well-being of the children in our kindergarten. The research project is in collaboration with a private French speaking kindergarten in Helsinki. The children, the guardians and the pedagogical team provided a very important support in answering my questions and allowing me to observe the children for this thesis.
This thesis theoretically introduced the definition of the well-being which involves the physical well-being, the psychological well-being, the social well-being, the educational or cognitive well-being. It also introduced the PERMA™theory of well-being. It is a theory of well-being developed by Martin Seligman. PERMA is the acronym for five factors on which this theory is based: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment. As a tool of my research, I will also present the Leuven Well-Being scale which was developed by Ferre Laevers and his team at the University of Leuven. It is a five-point scale that allows teachers to measure the emotional well-being of children. The main advantage is that it is based on observations and places the child at the center of learning.
I will show the importance of the relations between the children’s, the parents, and the educators. I will show the importance of building a welcoming environment where everyone in the day care feels supported and confidence.
