The goal of the project was to make a chamber around a 3D printer, where it would be possible to control nanoparticles classified as dangerous and other gases that are released when plastic is melted. The goal was also to keep the temperature stable inside the chamber. Temperature, humidity and air quality sensors were installed inside and outside of the chamber, where they were controlled with an Arduino Uno microcontroller. A 140 mm PC fan was used as an exhaust air fan, which was modified to be more absorbent through a HEPA filter in order to control the temperature successfully as the project progressed.
Modifying the fan into a vacuum greatly improved the suction power through the HEPA filter, but it was not enough to keep the chamber temperature stable. In the final stages of the project, one of the air quality sensors had broken, so the air quality values from outside of the chamber were not recorded. However, the results showed that ventilation is very important when 3D printing ABS plastic. In a poorly ventilated space, nanoparticles accumulate around the 3D printer, which increases health risks.
