Nuoret olivat motivoituneita osallistumaan projektiin. He kokivat omat kuvansa ja kuvaamisen merkityksellisiksi. Myös projektia he kuvasivat mielenkiintoiseksi ja mukavaksi toiminnaksi. Nuorten omat voimavarat tulivat heille tietoisemmiksi ja nuoret oppivat arvostamaan niitä enemmän. Tärkeimmiksi voimavaroiksi nousivat esille perhe, ystävät, harrastukset, eläimet, musiikki ja liikunta.
Voimauttava valokuvaaminen sopisi yläkoulujen opetustarjontaan, esimerkiksi osaksi kuvaamataidon opetusta. We have always been interested in arts and creative working. When our teacher suggested us a project with adolescents, we became interested immediately. We wanted to do conducive mental health work in action. We think that the theme of the project is also current.
Purpose of the project was to advance adolescents’ mental health and prevent mental health problems in the future. We aimed to improve adolescents’ mental health with participating action and by giving them positive experiences. We also wanted to help adolescents to find their own resources of empowerment and develop their identity.
The project was executed in cooperation with pupils from upper level of comprehensive school. A total of fourteen 14-year-old pupils were involved in the project. The working method was empowering photographing. Pupils’ task was to take pictures of their own resources of empowerment. They also answered the questions about their resources by e-mail and in an interview. We arranged a show on the basis of the photos pupils took. For the show pupils also named all the resources of empowerment they found during the project. The show was arranged at the comprehensive school where the pupils came from and in the School of Health and Social Care of Oulu University of Applied Sciences.
Adolescents were very motivated to participate in the project. They said that their own resources were very meaningful for them. They thought that the project was an interesting and pleasant activity. They became more aware of their resources and they learned to appreciate their resources more. When a person uses their resources of empowerment consciously they are more capable to cope in future crises.
We think that empowering photography would be suitable to be included in school syllabuses, for example in the teaching of art.
