The aim of this study is to enlighten and expand the view on what the other parent or caretaker thinks is important to bring forward and discuss at the maternity clinic. A relatively small amount of research has been done in how to build a maternity clinic where the partner is taken into consideration. The tree research questions are: ”How is the maternity clinic perceived by the other parent?”, “What does the other parent wish was discussed at the maternity clinic?” and “What does the other parent wish was discussed at a spouse clinic?".
Afaf Meleis’ theory of transitions and transition care work as the study’s theoretical basis. Originating from it the aim was further developed to support the transition from man to father or the transition that is triggered of a new child in the family. The research is a survey-study where the survey has both open and closed questions to minimize the risk of the participants thoughts of the questions disappearing. The informants were chosen through a convenience selection. The participants in the study were 19 in total.
The result shows that even though most of the other parents were welcomed at the maternity clinic a few of them still felt unnecessary and unwelcome. The other parent mainly wishes to discuss childbirth, the pregnancy, the child’s development, and family life when the partner is present. At a possible individual visit, the participants mainly felt it would be important to discuss childbirth, the child’s development, the pregnancy, and family life. Over all the participants considered all subjects to be more important to be discussed when the partner was present except for upbringing and the own health which were considered somewhat more important to discuss on an individual visit.
