The purpose of this thesis project was to examine the handle of a UPO branded fridge, and to find out why the handle was so prone to breaking and also to try to find ways to improve and strengthen its structure.
A structural analysis and FEM analysis were performed on the handle. Based on the results, it was clear that the biggest issue with the handle was its curved shape combined with a slanted attachment face on the door. The handle was designed so that in a normal usage situation, due a leverage, a major force was directed to the proximity of the fasteners. A bit more powerful jerk than average, could easily lead to the breakage of the handle.
Based on the data gathered form the structural analysis, a new design of the handle was created, where the curved shape was reversed and shortened a bit. Also, a topology optimized version of the handle was created. Then these two models were 3D printed along with the original model.
Pull tests were then performed on all these printed parts. The outcome of the pull test was that the strength of the handle was significantly in-creased when the curvature was reduced or reversed.
The conclusion was, that to increase the durability of the handle, there were basically two options: if the material of the handle was preferred to be kept the same as in the original handle (ABS), then the geometry had to be changed. If it was preferred to keep the geometry unchanged, then the material had to be changed to something more durable, aluminum for example.
